*********************************************************************************************************** Identifying Research Funding Data and programs for identifying research funding based on CFDA codes. *********************************************************************************************************** One way to distinguish research funding from other federal funding is by interrogating the CFDA (Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance) codes. The following data and programs can be used to flag funding that could be considered research funding. Yulia Muzyrya Graduate Student Research Assistant Stephen M Ross School of Business University of Michigan Original file CFDAcodes.xls downloaded from CFDA website on May 4, 2015. Converted to comma-separated file CFDAcodes.csv. There are two ways to get data: 1. Use CFDAcodes.dta. Indicator rf = 1 stands for research funding. 2. Run CFDAcodes.do (make sure CFDAcodes.csv is in the same folder, it serves as an input file). This way you can change do file if you want to add/delete some programs as the sources of resource funding. CFDA code is in XXXXX format as opposed to the website XX.XXX to ease merges. Guidelines for classification into research funding: The following are classified as research funding in the CFDAcodes.do file: research, science, census, statistics, policy evaluation, data, surveys, studies, laboratories, analysis, university building capacity These are NOT classified as research funding in the CFDAcodes.do file: library, education, including higher education, conservation, museums, training Some (NOT all) of the historical CFDA codes have been added at the end of the do-file. ***********************************************************************************************************
